Overview
Regional participation is organised through two ASEAN innovation tracks.
ASEAN Young Inventor Category
For school students from ASEAN countries other than Brunei Darussalam who are aged 15 to 18 on 25 January 2027 and still enrolled in school.

Eligibility and entry rules
- Open to residents of ASEAN countries other than Brunei Darussalam.
- The Young Inventor track is limited to school students aged 15 to 18 on 25 January 2027.
- Entries must be hardware, or a combination of hardware and software. Software-only products are not accepted.
- Entries may be individual or team-based, with a maximum of three members.
- Each participant may only appear in one eligible entry per category.
- Young Inventor entries must be supervised, nominated, and endorsed by the participant’s school.
Fees, payment, and travel
- ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category: USD 200
- ASEAN Young Inventor Category: USD 100
- Free registration is published for Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.
- Fees are non-refundable and must be paid by telegraphic transfer to Universiti Teknologi Brunei, Account No. 00-001-01-0045184, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, Swift Code BIBDBNBB.
- Participants must ensure bank charges are covered so the full amount reaches UTB.
- Participants are responsible for visas, travel insurance, customs requirements, and related taxes or handling charges.
- UTB will sponsor one return airline ticket and accommodation for one person from the winner of each ASEAN category to attend the final award ceremony in Brunei Darussalam.
Submission and judging rules
- Entries must include the entry form, proposal form, and scanned identification documents for all participants.
- The proposal description must be written in English and the final innovation must not be significantly different from that description.
- Shortlisted participants will be asked to provide a full final report.
- The innovation must be original and must not have been published, copied, or entered into other international competitions.
- All decisions of UTB, including shortlisting and judging decisions, are final.
Assessment and Prizes
Regional entries are assessed through the same two-stage judging model.
The ASEAN categories are assessed through preliminary screening and final assessment. Judges may consider novelty and creativity, relevance to the theme, deployment of the end product, Technology Readiness Level alignment, social and economic sustainability considerations, and the quality of the report and presentation.
The winner of the ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category may compete with the Local New Invention & Innovation winner for the Crown Prince Special Award and its grand prize of B$8,000.
Awards and prizes
- ASEAN New Invention & Innovation: 1st B$7,000, 2nd B$5,000, 3rd B$3,000, plus two Special Mention prizes of B$700.
- ASEAN Young Inventor: 1st B$3,500, 2nd B$2,000, 3rd B$1,000, plus two Special Mention prizes of B$500.
- Gold, silver, and bronze bands are awarded using the published judging score distribution.
- All participants receive participation certificates.
- Special Award for Sustainable Energy: ASEAN New Invention & Innovation BND 1,500; ASEAN Young Inventor BND 1,000.
