Overview

Two local tracks support public, institutional, and school-based innovation.

Local New Invention & Innovation Category

Open to members of the public and institutions of higher learning in Brunei Darussalam who have developed, or intend to develop, a suitable product, process, or project. Individual participation is permitted.

Local Young Inventor Category

Open to Bruneian school students from upper secondary to pre-university levels, or equivalent to Year 10 to Year 13 on 25 January 2027. This category recognises both new inventions and improvements to existing products, processes, or technologies.

Eligibility and team rules

  • The innovation must be hardware, or a combination of hardware and software. Software-only products are not accepted.
  • Both local categories are open to Bruneian residents with a valid Brunei identity card.
  • Local Young Inventor participants must still be enrolled in a Bruneian school from Year 10 to Year 13, or equivalent, on 25 January 2027.
  • Entries may be individual or team-based, with a maximum of three members including the team leader.
  • A participant may only join one entry per eligible category, and team composition cannot change after the deadline.
  • For school entries, the project must be supervised by a teacher and endorsed by the participant’s institution.

Submission and judging rules

  • Entries must include the entry form, proposal form, and scanned identification documents for all participants.
  • The declaration section must be electronically signed, and incomplete or late submissions will not be accepted.
  • The proposal may be written in Malay or English, and the final innovation submitted for judging must remain consistent with the proposal.
  • Shortlisted participants will be asked to submit a full final report.
  • The innovation must be original and must not have been published, entered in other international competitions, or copied from other sources.
  • Participants must set up and present their innovation at UTB, Brunei Darussalam, and make their own travel and presentation arrangements apart from basic equipment provided by UTB.

  • Local New Invention & Innovation Category: BND 80.00
  • Local Young Inventor Category: BND 40.00
  • Fees are non-refundable.

  • Debit or credit card payment at the UTB Finance Section

  • Bank transfer slips or advice must be uploaded together with the supporting documents.

Assessment and Prizes

Entries progress through preliminary assessment and final judging stages.

The local categories are assessed in two stages: preliminary assessment, followed by final assessment for shortlisted entries. Judging may consider novelty and creativity, relevance to the theme, deployment of the end product, Technology Readiness Level alignment, social and economic sustainability considerations, and the quality of the report and presentation.

The winner of the Local New Invention & Innovation Category may be selected to compete for the Crown Prince Special Award.

Awards and prizes

  • Local New Invention & Innovation: 1st B$7,000, 2nd B$5,000, 3rd B$3,000, plus two Special Mention prizes of B$700.
  • Local Young Inventor: 1st B$3,500, 2nd B$2,000, 3rd B$1,000, plus two Special Mention prizes of B$500.
  • Gold, silver, and bronze bands are awarded using the published judging score distribution.
  • All participants receive participation certificates.
  • Special Award for Sustainable Energy: Local New Invention & Innovation BND 1,500; Local Young Inventor BND 1,000.
