Overview

An introductory innovation pathway for lower secondary Bruneian students.

The Smart Junior Competition is open to Bruneian school students in the lower secondary levels, or equivalent to Year 7 to Year 9 on 25 January 2027. It focuses on original technological ideas and meaningful improvements to existing products, processes, or technologies.

No physical prototype is required. Instead, shortlisted participants present the strength of their ideas through a report, an A1-sized poster, and a short presentation of up to 15 minutes.

Eligibility and team rules

  • Open to Bruneian residents with a valid Brunei identity card who are still enrolled in school from Year 7 to Year 9, or equivalent, on 25 January 2027.
  • Entries may be individual or team-based, with a maximum of three members.
  • Each participant may only be part of one eligible entry.
  • Every entry must be supervised by a teacher and nominated and endorsed by the participant’s school.
  • At least one yellow or purple identity card holder is required for team entries.

Submission and judging rules

  • The competition is for ideas only. No prototype is required.
  • The entry fee is BND 20.00 and is non-refundable.
  • Participants must submit the entry form, proposal form, and scanned identification documents.
  • The Approval and Endorsement section must be completed by the supervisor, and the declaration must be electronically signed by the supervisor.
  • The idea must be original and not previously published, copied, or entered into other international competitions.
  • Shortlisted participants must prepare and present their poster and report at UTB, Brunei Darussalam.

Assessment and Prizes

Smart Junior recognises promising ideas, clear presentation, and early innovation potential.

The assessment follows two stages: preliminary screening and final assessment for shortlisted entries. Judges may consider novelty and creativity, relevance to the theme, social and economic sustainability considerations, and the quality of the report and presentation.

The competition is designed to encourage creativity and innovation among younger students without requiring a physical prototype at the entry stage.

Awards and prizes

  • 1st Prize: B$1,500, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate
  • 2nd Prize: B$1,000, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate
  • 3rd Prize: B$500, a trophy, a medal, and a certificate
  • Two Special Mention prizes: B$300 and certificates
  • Gold, silver, and bronze band awards are also issued according to the published judging score distribution.
  • All participants receive participation certificates.
  • Special Award for Sustainable Energy: BND 1,000 and a certificate.
